The First Lincoln Cents

Issued to commemorate the centennial of one of the greatest U.S. Presidents...

The longest-lived coin in our history, the Lincoln cent was the first circulating U.S. coin to feature a historic person. The very day it was released, newspapers nationwide strongly objected to the placement of designer Victor David Brenner’s initials on the coin. Almost immediately production was halted and the offending letters removed. The original V.D.B. penny was produced for only a few weeks before the second no-initial version took its place – a rare occurrence in U.S. coinage.

You will receive two first-year 1909 Lincoln pennies:

• Including both the scarcely seen, one-time-only “V.D.B.” version, which many call the ultimate Lincoln penny, and the non-initial version minted the same year.
• Enhanced by a mint-condition 1909 two-cent Lincoln 100th-anniversary stamp, the first U.S. commemorative stamp that did not promote a current event.
• Marking the first appearance of our national motto, “In God We Trust,” on the one-cent coin.
• Based on Mathew Brady’s 1864 photograph of Lincoln.
• Presented in uncirculated condition, protectively encapsulated—as is the stamp—to ensure worry-free viewing of both front and back for generations to come.
