The 1870's Five-Dollar "Baby Bond"

Own one-of-a-kind currency from the 19th century...

After the Civil War, the federal government denied states the chance to control their finances by issuing currency. Struggling to rebuild its economy, Louisiana came up with an ingenious way to circumvent the law. The states could issue bonds, so Louisiana produced a $5 “bond” that was, in reality, a state-issued $5 bill!

Known as the “Baby Bond,” due to its vignette of a small child, this one-of-a-kind note is among the most fascinating — but seldom seen — collector’s items from that era. It even bore interest-bearing coupons that could be redeemed at regular intervals.

In Louisiana, “Baby Bonds” proudly circulated alongside new federal paper currency — the ultimate “states’ rights” protest in the Reconstruction era! This unique 19th-century heirloom is now available from PCS Stamps & Coins.

The note you receive will:

• Bear the facsimile signatures of the state’s Treasurer and Governor, authenticating it as a genuine currency note issued by the State of Louisiana.
• Be enhanced by two Collector Panels (measuring approximately 4" x 6"), featuring a New Orleans port scene from the time period and a fact-filled narrative about the bond.
• Feature an intricately engraved design in green on the back, like federal “greenback” currency of this era, and a unique serial number, like a paper currency note.
• Be presented in stunning, uncirculated condition—with interest-bearing coupons still attached—and protectively encapsulated in a deluxe, bonded-leather Collector’s Folio.
• Please note: the year of issue and exact number of bond coupons on the note you receive may vary from those on the note shown.

This product allows you the convenience of a gradual payment plan. You can pay in two monthly installments.
